Domestic Wind Turbine

Just what is a domestic wind turbine?  Simply put, it is a wind generation system that consists of turbine blades for domestic use to generate electricity.  I’m sure you have seen those giant windmills or wind turbine blades measuring easily 30 feet long along the countryside.  Imagine something like that, 10 times smaller in your own backyard generating electricity for you!

I know, you might be thinking that it is impossible except for those who work as builders, engineers or architects.  The good news is that nowadays anyone can build his or her own domestic wind turbine.  There are plenty of useful guides to show you how to do it.  All you need are some basic tools, the time and willingness to do build your own wind turbine. 

The advantages of having your own wind turbine to generate electricity are clear.  You save on your utility bills.  In fact, if your generator is connected to your grid system, it can cause your electricity meter to move backwards and your utility company has to pay YOU instead.  You also do your part in saving the environment.  Traditional methods of generating electricity rely on burning fossil fuels like coal and gas that pollutes the environment and depletes the ozone among other things.  Not to mention it depletes the earth’s oil reserves.  As it is, the world’s population is using up 4 barrels of oil for every 1 that is produced.  So, using alternative renewable energy sources like the sun and the wind might soon be a necessity, not just an option.  Why wait until a crisis hits?  You can generate your own energy now.

As I said, a domestic wind turbine is simply a system consisting of wind turbine blades.  It requires a motor that acts as the generator that changes the wind’s kinetic energy into electrical energy.  There are 2 types of wind turbines – horizontal wind turbines and vertical wind turbines.  The more common and efficient is the horizontal one where the blades are around a horizontal axis.  The vertical wind turbine has blades around a vertical axis, somewhat like an egg beater.  The horizontal wind turbine needs to face the wind to turn whereas the vertical wind turbine catches the wind no matter which direction it comes from.

Making your own domestic wind turbine involves constructing the blades, attaching them to the motor that is installed inside a body, hoisting the body onto a tower and connecting the motor to a battery to store the electricity.  The electricity then needs to be changed from DC to AC current via an inverter.  That might seem like a difficult task but there are ways to make it easier.  For example, you can buy some of the components like the blades, motor and tower.  In fact, unless you really cannot afford them, you should consider buying some or all 3 of these parts because they are the most important parts of your wind generator.
