How to Build a Magnetic Generator
Recent developments have made making your own generator at home very achievable. You could make a wind-powered or a solar powered one. But that would entail a fair bit of work. A wind generator needs you to build a tower for it to be
high enough to catch the wind (not to mention building the generator itself and all the wiring that goes with
it) and to build a solar panel would also mean you need to mount it up on your roof (besides
connecting solar cells and building the panel itself). There is
another type of generator that does not need so much effort to construct. It is the magnetic generator.

Unlike the solar and wind generator that are both
weather dependent, the magnetic generator uses the principle of magnetism and therefore does not depend
on the weather at all. As you know, opposite poles of a magnet
attract while like poles repel each other. Hence, to make a
magnetic generator you need a wheel made of non-conductive material like wood or plastic with magnets places
strategically along its rim that have the same polarity facing outwards. Make a hole at the exact center of the wheel because you need the wheel to
spin. Now you need to place another magnet just outside the rim
with the same polarity facing inwards. Once these 2 sets of magnets
are in proper position, the like poles will repel each other.

Now connect the wheel to a DC motor. The most secure way to do this is by using an arbor (which you can buy from
eBay). Make sure that the size of the arbor fits the shaft of the
DC motor. Insert the arbor into the hole in the center of the wheel
and screw it on. Then slip the arbor onto the shaft of the
motor and tighten it. Since the inner and outer magnets repel each
other, the wheel will start to spin naturally and perpetually. As
the wheel spins, it will rotate the shaft which in turn will generate electricity through the principle of
electromagnetic induction within the motor.
The electricity that the motor generates must be stored in a battery for later
use. But to ensure the battery’s maximum lifespan, the
motor has to be connected to a charge controller first which will prevent overcharging of the
battery. But the electricity in the battery is in the form of DC
current and this needs to be converted into AC current via an inverter before being used to power your
electrical appliances.
These are the components and basic guidelines in constructing a magnetic
generator. All the parts can be sourced from the hardware store
or from places like eBay. If you follow the more specific
instructions from some of the DIY guides on how to build a magnetic generator for your home, you can
make one that will generate free electricity for yourself.
